Jeff Brown Yachts revitalized the historic Eichenlaub Boatyard on Shelter Island, transforming it into The Olde Boatyard as a tribute to Carl Eichenlaub, the legendary San Diego yachtsman and boat builder. For nearly six decades, Eichenlaub shaped the sailing world as a world-class competitor, master shipwright, and mentor to many of San Diego’s most celebrated sailors and yacht designers. His legacy, honored through this project, continues to inspire the maritime community.

A San Diego Maritime Legend


Carl Eichenlaub was a renowned San Diego yachtsman, master boat builder, and influential figure in sailing for over six decades. As a shipwright for the U.S. National Sailing Team in seven Olympic Games, he left an indelible mark on the sport, mentoring some of San Diego’s top sailors and yacht designers.

Honored as Yachtsman of the Year three times, Eichenlaub was inducted into both the Intercollegiate and National Sailing Halls of Fame. In 2000, he received U.S. Sailing’s highest honor, the Nathanael Herreshoff Award, cementing his legacy as a pioneer and innovator in the sailing world.
